At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, our Hospitality and Catering curriculum provides pupils with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in one of the UK’s largest and most diverse employment sectors. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, pupils develop an understanding of food preparation, nutrition, customer service and the hospitality industry while building valuable life and employability skills.
We believe that Hospitality and Catering offers a unique opportunity for pupils to develop independence, creativity and responsibility. Learners gain practical experience in planning, preparing and presenting food while developing an understanding of healthy eating, nutrition and food safety. These essential life skills support pupils both in their future careers and in everyday life.
Our curriculum combines practical learning with theoretical knowledge, enabling pupils to understand how the hospitality and catering industry operates. Pupils explore topics such as menu planning, food provenance, dietary requirements, food hygiene, health and safety, and the importance of meeting the needs of different customers and communities.
Through practical cooking activities, pupils develop confidence in using a range of ingredients, equipment and preparation techniques. They learn how to work safely and hygienically while producing dishes that demonstrate increasing levels of skill, creativity and independence.
Hospitality and Catering also provides valuable opportunities to develop wider personal and employability skills. Pupils learn the importance of teamwork, communication, organisation, problem-solving and time management, all of which are highly valued by employers across a wide range of industries.
We encourage learners to understand the importance of professionalism, customer service and adaptability within hospitality settings. Through real-world scenarios and industry-related learning, pupils gain insight into the expectations and opportunities available within the sector.
