Humanities

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, our Humanities curriculum helps pupils develop a deeper understanding of the world, its people, and the events that have shaped society. Through the study of History, Geography and Religious Education, learners are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, explore different perspectives and develop an appreciation of the diverse communities in which they live. 

We believe that Humanities plays a vital role in helping young people make sense of the world around them. By exploring the past, understanding the present and considering the future, pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to become informed, responsible and active citizens. 

Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, relevant and accessible, supporting pupils to build on their experiences while broadening their understanding of local, national and global issues. Through enquiry, discussion and investigation, learners develop confidence in expressing their views, evaluating evidence and considering different viewpoints. 

History

Through History, pupils explore significant events, individuals and periods that have shaped Britain and the wider world. They develop an understanding of how the past influences the present while learning to analyse sources, evaluate evidence and construct reasoned arguments. By examining a range of historical perspectives, pupils gain a greater appreciation of diversity, change and continuity over time. 

Geography

Geography enables pupils to understand the relationship between people, places and environments. Learners explore physical and human geography, developing knowledge of different regions, cultures and global challenges. Through the study of topics such as climate change, sustainability, migration and urbanisation, pupils are encouraged to think critically about the world and their role within it. 

Religious Education

Religious Education provides opportunities for pupils to explore a range of beliefs, values and worldviews. Through respectful discussion and reflection, learners develop an understanding of different faiths, cultures and ethical issues. This helps pupils build tolerance, empathy and respect for others while encouraging them to reflect on their own beliefs and values.
