At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that English is a powerful tool for communication, self-expression and understanding the world around us. Through reading, writing and spoken language, pupils develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in education, employment and everyday life.

Our English curriculum is designed to inspire a love of language and literature while ensuring pupils develop the essential literacy skills required for future success. We have high expectations for all learners and support them to become confident readers, effective communicators and thoughtful writers.

Through the study of a diverse range of texts, pupils explore different perspectives, cultures and experiences. They are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and engage with themes that help them better understand themselves and the world around them. Reading plays a central role in our curriculum, helping pupils develop knowledge, empathy and cultural awareness while fostering a lifelong appreciation of literature.

Developing strong communication skills is a key priority. Pupils are given regular opportunities to participate in discussions, presentations and debates, helping them build confidence, articulate their ideas and listen respectfully to the views of others.

We recognise that many of our learners may have experienced interruptions to their education or require additional support with literacy. Our curriculum is carefully adapted to meet individual needs, providing targeted support and intervention where necessary. By building on prior learning and addressing gaps in knowledge, we help pupils make meaningful progress and achieve their full potential.

English also plays an important role in supporting pupils’ personal development. Through the study of literature, learners encounter a range of characters, experiences and viewpoints that encourage reflection, resilience, empathy and understanding. These experiences help pupils develop the confidence and character needed to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.

We enrich learning through a range of experiences, including theatre visits, live performances, author studies and creative projects, bringing literature to life and broadening pupils’ cultural experiences.

Through exploring diverse texts and perspectives, pupils gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, experiences and communities, helping them become respectful and active citizens.

Through English, we aim to empower every pupil to find their voice, develop a love of learning and leave River Tyne Academy equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in their next steps.

English Literature

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that literature has the power to inspire, challenge and transform lives. Through the study of a diverse range of texts, pupils develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the world around them. English Literature encourages curiosity, critical thinking and empathy, helping learners to explore different perspectives, cultures and experiences.

Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, thoughtful readers who can engage with increasingly complex texts and ideas. Through the study of novels, plays, poetry and literary non-fiction, pupils learn to analyse language, structure and themes while developing their ability to form and justify personal interpretations.

We carefully sequence learning to build pupils’ knowledge and confidence over time. As learners progress through the curriculum, they encounter a range of texts that increase in complexity and depth, allowing them to strengthen their reading, analytical and evaluative skills. New learning builds on prior knowledge, ensuring that pupils develop a secure understanding of literary concepts and can apply these effectively across different texts.

A key aim of our curriculum is to broaden pupils’ cultural awareness and encourage them to engage with important social, moral and historical issues. Through literature, pupils explore themes such as identity, relationships, justice, conflict, resilience and hope. These opportunities support both academic development and personal growth, helping pupils to reflect on their own experiences and develop greater understanding of the experiences of others.

At Key Stage 4, pupils study a range of challenging and engaging texts, including Shakespeare, nineteenth-century literature, modern drama and poetry. This ensures they gain valuable cultural capital while developing the knowledge and skills required for success in GCSE English Literature and beyond.

We recognise that literature can also play an important role in supporting wellbeing and self-reflection. Stories, characters and poetry provide opportunities for pupils to explore emotions, develop resilience and discover new perspectives in a safe and supportive environment.

Through English Literature, we aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of reading while equipping pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to engage thoughtfully with the world around them. Our curriculum helps learners become reflective, articulate and informed individuals who are prepared for their next steps in education and life.
