Developing Character, Values and Understanding

At River Tyne Academy, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is an integral part of our Personal Development curriculum. We believe that education is about more than academic achievement; it is about helping young people develop the character, values, and understanding needed to become confident, responsible, and active members of society. 

Through SMSC, we provide opportunities for pupils to explore their own beliefs, values, and identity while developing respect and understanding for others. We encourage pupils to reflect on their experiences, consider different perspectives, and develop a greater awareness of the world around them. 

Our Approach

SMSC is woven throughout Academy life and is promoted through lessons, assemblies, enrichment activities, educational visits, community projects, and everyday interactions.

Spiritual Development

Moral Development

Social Development

• Build positive relationships and communication skills. 

• Develop empathy, cooperation, and teamwork.

• Learn how to resolve conflict and respect differing viewpoints. 

Cultural Development

• Explore and celebrate different cultures, traditions, and beliefs. 

• Develop an appreciation of diversity and inclusion. 

• Understand and respect the values and experiences of others. 

• Engage with the rich cultural opportunities available within the local community and beyond. 

The Impact

Our SMSC curriculum helps pupils develop the confidence, resilience, and social awareness needed to succeed in modern life. Through meaningful experiences and reflection, pupils learn to value themselves, respect others, and contribute positively to their communities.
